VBB member Kate Taylor is a veterinary nurse and dog trainer from Queensland and can’t wait for her first volunteer mission in Cambodia next month! Kate works as a relief vet nurse at Palmwoods Veterinary Clinic and a dog trainer for Smart Pups Assistance Dogs.
“I like helping clients and sharing their love for their pets. I most enjoy learning about animal behaviour. It was this interest that led me to work as a dog trainer for Smart Pups,” she said.
Kate joined VBB last year with the express purpose of volunteering overseas.
“I had always thought it was something I would like to do ‘one day’. Now my children have grown up and left home; I realised that the ‘one day’ had arrived,” she said.
She will be volunteering for three weeks at the Phnom Penh Animal Welfare Society’s clinic in Phnom Penh.
“I imagine I will feel like a fish out of water to start with, so I am looking forward to achieving a sense of understanding and ultimately to being useful in a practical way,” she said. “I think volunteering will really help me to go back to the basic fundamentals of good nursing, watching the patient and reading the vital signs without an over reliance on technology.”
Kate said she is counting the days until she leaves for Cambodia.
“VBB do such great work and I am so lucky to have this chance to contribute in a very modest way,” she said. “The Cambodian people have such a positive reputation as beautiful, generous people. I am hoping this adventure might be the first of many!”
We hope so too, Kate. We wish you a safe trip and a wonderful volunteer experience in Cambodia!
