Bushfire Veterinary Assistance
Members of Vets Beyond Borders, Dr Elaine Ong and Dr Chris Barton are contributing their skills and experience to the Australian Veterinary Association Emergency Task Force. Dr Elaine Ong is managing the triage centres and the expert advisory group. Dr Chris Barton is managing the donation from drug companies, the assemblage, issue and distribution of triage kits. The task forces' purpose is to assist the rescue and treatment of animal victims (wildlife and domestic pets) in Victoria, after horrific bushfires swept throughout the state on 9 February 2009.
If you are a vet or vet nurse and interested in volunteering please email cathy.mcadie@gmail.com
The Eltham Central Vet Hospital is also kindly accepting donations of drugs and supplies to assist in the rescue efforts. If you would like to donate supplies please email cbarton@dvvet.com.au
or send the supplies directly to
Eltham Central Vet Clinic, 1282 Main Road, Eltham, Victoria.
You will also have to complete the 'Basic Wildfire Awareness' online course. This is mandatory and there are no exceptions. This can be accessed at firetraining.org.au. You will need to complete the Volunteer Questionairre sheet which will allow us to coordinate skills and experience to areas of need.
Please note: that veterinarians must be registered in the state of Victoria. The Australian Veterinary Association has introduced an emergency registration system, valid for one month.
