OVERSEAS TRAINING INITIATIVE

Vets Beyond Borders is an Australian-based, not-for-profit organisation, founded by veterinarians, which establishes and supports animal welfare projects in the Asia-Pacific region. VBB emphasises the provision of clinical training for the indigenous veterinary personnel with whom we work.

We have recently received a brief from a large sponsor to prepare a submission for a major initiative to deliver significant and sustainable animal-welfare benefit throughout our area of operation.

In this regard, VBB proposes to establish training teams to deliver short, formal, clinical programmes (notably surgery, medicine, epidemiology and pathology) to groups of local veterinarians in the Asia-Pacific region.

It is envisaged that team members will travel overseas for a minimum period of two to three weeks, and may be involved on a one-off or on-going basis. All training materials and equipment would be supplied by VBB. Under the terms of the proposal a remuneration package would be provided and travel and living expenses would be reimbursed.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from veterinarians and veterinary nurses. Veterinarians should hold a veterinary degree registrable in Australia and possess proven teaching skills. This scheme would offer a valuable opportunity to pass on your skills to indigenous veterinary personnel striving to improve veterinary healthcare in their communities.

Veterinarian

Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Fiji Islands (SPCA)
Location - Suva, Nadi and elsewhere in Fiji Duration - 24 months

Position Description:
Training: The Volunteer will help to train and upgrade the skills of the Vet Nurses (and perhaps in the future Para-Vets) assigned to the SPCA to enable them, given the scarcity of available Vets, to undertake as much of the clinical work as possible. He/she will also help train and upgrade the skills of the Kennel Manager and Kennel Hands to enhance the welfare and level of care and attention given to the animals at the SPCA.

Service Delivery: The Volunteer will, from a veterinary position, work with the Staff and Executive committee of the SPCA to explore ways and means to enhance and expand the service delivery of the SPCA’s various clinics (Suva, Nadi, and outreach), bearing in mind that the organisation is, first and foremost a not-for-profit non-governmental animal welfare organisation, which however has to at least cover its costs.

Systems: Once the Volunteer has had an opportunity to become familiar with the work of the SPCA and has studied a number of reports and recommendations of previous visiting veterinarians, he/she will assist with the drafting of Practice Manuals, Clinic Protocols, and Kennel Management Policies and Procedures.
